Cashback pays back a percentage of your net losses over a period. The rate, the frequency and whether it's cash or bonus funds decide whether it's genuinely valuable.
Cashback returns a percentage of your net losses over a defined window — usually a week, sometimes a day, occasionally in real time on individual games. It's the only major promo type where the operator is genuinely subsidising losses rather than seeding future play.
The details decide the value: (1) the rate (5% is standard, 10-15% is generous, 20%+ is exceptional and usually VIP-only); (2) the payout — real cash or bonus funds subject to wagering; (3) the calculation window and any deposit-vs-withdrawal timing; (4) the minimum loss threshold; (5) the maximum payout cap.

The two questions that matter: is it paid as cash or bonus, and what's the effective rate on your normal play pattern? A 10% cash cashback beats a 20% bonus-funds cashback for most players once you account for the wagering. Also check the calculation basis: some operators calculate cashback on net losses (deposits minus withdrawals in the window), others on wagered volume — the second is closer to rakeback and is more generous to active players. Read our wagering requirements guide if the cashback comes as bonus funds.
Three dominant formats. Weekly cashback: a fixed percentage of the week's net loss, credited every Monday. Daily/live cashback: smaller percentage (usually 5-10%), credited more frequently, better for high-volume players. Game-specific cashback: some operators run live cashback on losing hands in blackjack or on losing bets in specific slots — this is the most player-favourable format when available.
Wager-free cashback is real cash you can withdraw immediately. Bonus-funds cashback carries the operator's standard wagering (usually 30x-40x). Given identical rates, wager-free cashback is worth about 4-6x more in expectation. Some UKGC-licensed operators have moved to wager-free-only cashback under the 2024 bonus-simplification pressure — this is the format to prioritise where available.
The highest cashback rates (15-25%) are almost always tied to VIP tiers or specific game verticals like sports and live casino. Non-VIP cashback rarely exceeds 10%. If the marketing headline is a 25% rate, check what tier is required to actually receive it — usually months of high-volume play. A steady 10% wager-free cashback for all players is worth more than a 25% VIP-locked rate for the majority of players.
